Bishkek, July 10, 2019. /Kabar/. Dr. Camille Wardrop Alleyne, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) engineer has arrived in Bishkek. This became known at a press conference at Kabar News Agency.
Her visit is connected with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Space Mission.
Dr. Alleyne said she had arrived to raise awareness of the need to involve women in science, engineering, mathematics, physics and other fields.
"I have spent 25 years of my career on designing and developing rockets and space craft. Currently, I serve as the deputy manager for our commercial Luna pilot’s services, which is part of the NASA’s mission to go back to the moon in a sustainable way. We will work with U.S commercial companies and international partners on this Luna exploration program. Ultimately, our goal is to send astronauts back to the surface of the moon by the year 2024," she said.
Dr. Alleyne mentioned the Kyrgyz women who are working on the construction and development of the satellite.
"These young women are developing, designing and ultimately testing, launching and operating a cube satellite. This is not small feat. This is the first time when a team is made up of women only," she added.
With the support of the U.S. Embassy, Dr. Alleyne has already conducted four virtual workshops for these girls from March to June 2019. During these lessons, young women learned the basics of engineering and satellite construction, including theoretical knowledge about receiving and transmitting data and testing procedures prior to launch.
"Finally, I would say these young women and what they are doing serves as an extraordinary example of what’s possible for young women in science technology and engineering," she concluded.
Kyzjibek Batyrkanova, the head of the Kyrgyz space program, noted that they have learned a lot of new things during lectures with the NACA engineer and received knowledge and motivation.
"At first, we planned to launch the satellite by the end of this year. Actually, this process takes a lot of time and we are researching the market. We plan to do it within two years," Batyrkanova added.
Dr. Alleyne will share her experience on past and current NASA programs, and meet with girls and women interested in careers in STEM.
Dr. Alleyne will have a networking meeting with local researchers from the National Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Education and Science, Central-Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences, and researchers from various institutions of higher education.
Dr. Camille Wardrop Alleyne is an American NASA rocket engineer, space scientist, internationally-acclaimed speaker, writer, educational leader and science ambassador whose accomplishments in the field of space exploration have been extraordinary. In the highly technical fields of science and engineering where women are in the minority, she is one of the most-recognized women in aerospace engineering and one of the few women of color to serve in a senior technical management and leadership position at NASA.
