AKIPRESS.COM - Eighteen titles of Braille textbooks on general education subjects and 44 audio textbooks in disciplines have been published in Kyrgyzstan with financial support of the Soros Foundation-Kyrgyzstan.
People with visual impairments make more than 8,000 among 176,000 people with disabilities in Kyrgyzstan. Around 10-15% are young people, which is around 800-1200, according to the Ministry of Labor and Social Development.
Around 10-12 children graduate from the special boarding school for blind children and children with visual impairments in Bishkek, 7-9 children graduate from a similar school in Osh. 90% of school graduates enter universities and then face problems with textbooks in general subjsects and disciplines.
The country did not have Braille textbooks and audio books on general education subjects and disciplines so far. The published textbooks will be handed over to the National Youth Library and National Library of Kyrgyzstan, where they can be used by any willing blind university student.
