President Tokayev orders to toughen civil control over penitentiary institutions

AKIPRESS.COM - President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has tasked to strengthen civilian control over penitentiary institutions of the country, Tengrinews.kz reports. "I have ordered the General Prosecutor's Office to thoroughly investigate the torture of prisoners in penitentiary institution of Zarechnoe village of Almaty region. Five employees of the colony were detained, a number of others were fired. The Interior Ministry was ordered to modernize the penitentiary institutions, strengthen civilian control to prevent such incidents," the head of state wrote on Twitter.
Minister of Interior of Kazakhstan Erlan Turgumbayev has recently promised to check the colonies after video with torture of prisoners appeared on social media.
Turgumbayev called the torture in the colony as "a shame of the penal system".
