UN special rapporteur to familiarize with situation in Kyrgyzstan on rights of minority groups

Bishkek, Sept.13, 2019. /Kabar/. Daniyar Mukashev, Permanent Representative of Kyrgyzstan to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva on Wednesday met with Fernand de Varennes, the UN Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues, the press service of Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.
During the meeting the sides discussed the upcoming visit of the UN special rapporteur to Kyrgyzstan at the invitation of the Kyrgyz Government at the end of this year.
The purpose of the visit is to familiarize with the situation in Kyrgyzstan with the rights of ethnic, linguistic and religious minorities.
Fernand de Varennes praised and thanked for the decision of the Government of Kyrgyzstan to invite him to the country, which, according to him, indicates the full commitment of Kyrgyzstan to the protection of human rights and cooperation with the UN Special Procedures.
UN Special Procedures are independent human rights experts, mandated to inform and advise on specific human rights issues or human rights situations in certain countries. The Special Procedures system is a central element of the UN human rights machinery and covers all human rights: civil, cultural, economic, political and social.
