Uzbek businessman Gafur Rakhimov asks to remove him from US sanctions list

AKIPRESS.COM - Uzbek businessman, former President of the International Boxing Association Gafur Rakhimov has demanded to declare his inclusion into the US sanctions list unlawful, CA-News reports. Rakhimov brought a lawsuit against the the Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control.
The businessman was included into the US sanctions list in 2012 over suspected affiliation with the Brothers' Circle, the presumed crime group of natives of the former Soviet Union republics.
In 2017, the Department of Treasury accused Rakhimov of supporting the network of crime bosses. All his property located by the United States in its jurisdiction was frozen.
"Almost eight years in OFAC list caused and still causes irreparable financial and reputation damage for Rakhimov," Rakhimov's lawyers said.
Earlier, Rakhimov had to leave his position as a head of AIBA, as the sanctions imposed on him impeded the development of the organization. In particular, due to suspicion of his involvement in crime, he was prohibited to visit the youth Olympic games 2018, and participation of his sports organization in Olympic games in Tokyo in 2020 was put on hold.
