Bishkek, Sept. 19, 2019 / Kabar /. The international scientific and practical forum: "Central Asia: modern challenges and risks for prison systems" is held in Bishkek, the press service of the State Service for Punishment Execution said.
The forum is attended by representatives of the prison services of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, as well as international organizations and independent experts.
The purpose of the international scientific and practical forum is to develop a penal policy for the penal systems of Central Asian countries in working with convicts for terrorist and extremist crimes, taking into account modern challenges and risks, to prevent the spread of the ideology of violent extremism in prisons, and to determine measures to encourage prisoners to non-violence, assistance to them in social rehabilitation.
Before the start of the forum, delegations visited the Ata Beit memorial complex and institutions where prisoners convicted of terrorism and extremism are kept, familiarizing themselves with the conditions of detention. Further, the forum participants visited the only female penal colony in Kyrgyzstan.
During the forum the participants discussed the experience of the penitentiary systems of Central Asian countries in working with prisoners for crimes of a terrorist nature and extremist orientation and adopted a number of recommendations.
The international forum was held by the State Service for Punishment Execution and UNODC in the framework of the joint project "Prevention of radicalization of violence in the organs and institutions of the penal system of the Kyrgyz Republic", together with UNDP with financial support from the UN Peacebuilding Fund.
