AKIPRESS.COM - Rabies incidence is registered on the territory of 167 countries of the world, the Republican Center for Quarantine and Highly Dangerous Infections said citing the World Health Organization.
One person dies every 10 minutes from hydrophobia (rabies), while 144 people die every day. Annually, the number of deaths from rabies reaches 50 thousand people globally.
The number of people at risk of contracting hydrophobia in Bishkek in the first 7 months of 2019 was 1973, 35.3% of whom were children under 14. The last time rabies killed 3 people was in 2010. In all 3 cases, the source of infection was stray dogs. Rabies was reported in Leilek district of Batken region, Tash-Kumyr town and Suzak district of Jalal-Abad region.
The main reason for the appearance of rabies in the republic is, first of all, a neglectful attitude to the maintenance of dogs and cats by the population:
- lack of accurate records and incomplete vaccination against rabies in dogs and cats;
- lack of systematic work on catching and shooting stray dogs and wild flesh-eating animals.
