Former Consul General of Kyrgyzstan in Istanbul Erkin Sopokov arrested

AKIPRESS.COM - Former Consul General of Kyrgyzstan in Istanbul Erkin Sopokov has been detained, the National Security Committee said.
Sopokov was summoned for questioning by the Committee on Nov 28. Comprehensive inspection of Sopokov's activities as the Consul General of Kyrgyzstan in Istanbul revealed that Sopokov illegally gave Land Rover car with diplomatic plates 34 SS 2902 to unauthorized persons, including Aierken Saimaiti, the statement said.
Criminal probe in power abuse was launched.
Sopokov is also accused of illegal enrichment ($200,000), purchase of real estate worth 47.6 million soms; abuse of power on the fact of illegal receipt of 30% of payments for the stay of Sopokov's wife on an overseas trip to Istanbul, but she did not actually live there.
Sopokov was placed in GKNB pre-trial detention center.
Chinese businessman Aierken Saimaiti was fatally killed on 10 November 2019 at the hotel cafe in Istanbul.
The Range Rover car belonging to the Consulate General in Istanbul was found near the murder scene.
President Sooronbai Jeenbekov sacked Erkin Sopokov on November 12. The Foreign Ministry of Kyrgyzstan said Sopokov could not explain why his car was at the murder scene.
The Turkish police detained 3 suspects later. Two of them said they were citizens of Kyrgyzstan.
According to Turkish media reports, Saimaiti was killed over $1.25 million. The moment of the attack on Saimaiti was caught on security camera.
