AKIPRESS.COM - The law on prohibition of geological exploration for prospecting and development of uranium and thorium deposits has entered into force. President Sooronbai Jeenbekov signed the law prohibiting activities related to geological exploration for prospecting and development of uranium and thorium deposits in Kyrgyzstan on December 16, 2019.
The law was passed by the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan on 31 October 2019.
The aim of the law is protection of health of population, land, water, flora and fauna, ensuring rights of citizens for favorable environment for life, labor and recreation, as well as ensuring nuclear and environmental safety in the Kyrgyz Republic.
The law prohibits:
1) geological exploration for further prospecting of uranium and thorium deposits;
2) development of uranium and thorium deposits;
3) development of radioactive tailings, rock dumps and their transfer to private individuals for further development and maintenance.
The law also bans import of uranium and thorium bearing wastes into the country.
The law has entered into forces 15 days after its signing (December 16).
