AKIPRESS.COM - A 19-year-old Kazakh student of the Hong Kong Baptist University Abilkair Nukpi who was detained by police in November during the Hong Kong protests was released on bail, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry said. Court also ruled Nukpi to live together with his mother in the campus of the Hong Kong Baptist University until the next trial set for Feb 26 and follow the lockdown.
Nukpi was detained on 19 November 2019 during the protests on the territory of the university.
The 2019-20 Hong Kong protests are ongoing demonstrations in Hong Kong triggered by the introduction of the Fugitive Offenders amendment bill by the Hong Kong government. If enacted, the bill would have allowed the extradition of criminal fugitives who are wanted in territories with which Hong Kong does not currently have extradition agreements, including Taiwan and mainland China. This led to concerns that the bill would subject Hong Kong residents and visitors to the jurisdiction and legal system of mainland China, thereby undermining the region's autonomy and Hong Kong people's civil liberties.
