AKIPRESS.COM - The Ata-Meken faction of the Kyrgyz Parliament has presented an updated draft law on development of glaciers today.
The faction members told about the situation with glacier melting and amendments to the law on accountability for activities leading to destruction of glaciers.
In 2013, a similar bill was rejected by then President.
MP Natalya Nikitenko reminded that almost all parliamentarians were against the law on development of Davydov and Lysyi glaciers then. The faction has a historical right to promote this draft bill, she added.
"The bill is applied to all glaciers including the Davydov and the Lysyi glaciers," she said.
The draft law determines what are a glacier basin, environmental damage, preglacial theory and foresees the responsibility for dangerous activities for the glaciers.
According to the parliamentarians, Kumtor gold company is developing glaciers in Kyrgyzstan.
Nikitenko said that Canada is carrying out a big campaign on preserving glaciers, although it has a strongly developed industry.
"Nevertheless, they are developing fields on the territory of Kyrgyzstan," she said.
Expert Kaliya Moldogaziyeva said that the bill does not touch the activities of Kumtor company.
Some lawmakers offered to discuss the document with the government, the others urged to cooperate with international funds in this issue, as the government has no that much money for the bill.
