AKIPRESS.COM - Around 70,000 people were evacuated after burst of the Sardobe dam in Syrdarya region of Uzbekistan in the morning of May 1.
The video of the flooded areas called now as "Sardobe Venice" was shared among social media users.
According to official reports, 56 people were taken to hospitals. Two servicemen of the National Guard of Uzbekistan, who were involved into the rescue and evacuation operation, were carried away by the strong flow of water on May 1. The body of one serviceman was found. The search for the second serviceman is ongoing.
More than 30,000 citizens of Turkestan region of Kazakhstan were evacuated after flooding of several villages due the dam burst in Syrdarya region.
Kazakhstan estimated the damage caused by flooding at 404 million tenge, slightly less than $1 million. On May 4, Turkestan region governor Umirzak Shukeyev departed for Uzbekistan to discuss the regulation of the situation.
The official reasons of the dam burst were not announced yet. Uzbek officials blamed abnormally strong windstorm, which allegedly destroyed the bottom part of the dam.
