Vice Speaker on mudflows in Leilek district: 85-m dam didn't stand an hour even

AKIPRESS.COM - A 85-meter dam did not stand an hour even during the mudflows in Leilek district. The quality was bad, Vice Speaker Mirlan Bakirov (Onuguu-Progress) said today in Parliament.
"Right, the dam was built. A half of it was destroyed, but it performed its protection function," Emergency Minister Zamirbek Askarov said.
"To spend so much money for the dam that stood for an hour... I even do not know how to treat this," Vice Speaker Bakirov said.
Asked how much funds are envisioned for disaster prevention, Emergency Minister Askarov said around 400 million soms.
The Vice Speraker reminded the mudflow struck Bazar-Korgon district in 2012. The group of MPs visited the site. The mudflow protection canal was built there for 35-40 million soms.
"The problem was solved with construction of the canal. Sometimes it is better to spend money for construction to avoid damage," the Vice Speaker said.
The Vice Speaker referred to construction of the Big Chui Canal in 1958. "It was built by people, manually, without use of any vehicles and machines. Probably we need to consider involvement of citizens in such projects? We incur losses for millions every year, we should do something," he said.
