AKIPRESS.COM - Director General of the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs L.Munkhtushig announced that a charter flight will be arranged to Sydney, Australia and necessary permissions to conduct direct flight to the country have recently been received.
The MIAT Mongolian Airlines flight, which will depart on the night of June 6, Saturday, will be the first repatriation flight to Australia.
The State Emergency Commission (SEC) last week reported that eight more charter flights will be operated to several countries, including Kazakhstan, Japan, India, South Korea, and Germany to bring some 2000 Mongolians stranded abroad in June. Destinations of two of them are not finalized, Montsame reports.
More than 270 people are expected to return with the charter flight. The plane will also bring 34 Mongolians from the Philippines, when it makes a fuel stop there on its return from Australia. The plane is scheduled to land in Ulaanbaatar on the morning of June 8, Monday.
As of today, there are 11,600 Mongolians stuck in 45 countries due to COVID-19 border restrictions who have requested to return to Mongolia, including over 2,600 people in the North America, 5,500 people in Asian countries and 2,600 people in Europe and more than 1,200 Mongolians from Australia. The SEC highlighted that the number is anticipated to rise, therefore, only those with reasonable excuses to return home, such as health concerns, will be given seats on the charter planes.
The destination for the eighth flight for this month is yet to be confirmed, according to the SEC.
In compliance with safety and prevention measures, all returnees will be immediately placed under 21-day isolation and further 14-day home isolation upon their arrival in Mongolia.
