Mongolia's Ministry of Health buys ECMO for citizens' donations

AKIPRESS.COM - Mongolian citizens launched fund-raising campaign with coronavirus infection outbreak in the world. Some $1.2 million were raised in total.
State Emergency Committee bought ECMO for these funds and is planning to transport the machine to Mongolia soon, Minister of Health department's head D. Narangerel reported.
ECMO or Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation is an invasive extracorporeal method of blood oxygenation during development of severe acute respiratory failure.
ECMO is used in neonatology to relieve severe respiratory failure in newborns due to hyaline membrane disease (RDS) and other pathologies, in cardiology for acute heart failure and for life support during open heart surgery in conjunction with a heart-lung machine.
ECMO assists patients with acute severe respiratory failure. The indicator for the need for ECMO is the oxygen tension in arterial blood below 50 mm. Hg when the oxygen content in the inhaled mixture is more than 50%.
The survival rate with the use of ECMO devices for severe patients with pneumonia who are not helped by mechanical ventilation is 56-70%.
ECMO is used worldwide for COVID-19 treatment in serious condition.
