AKIPRESS.COM - Former President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev made statement on the criminal case of crime boss Aziz Batukayev, who was released from prison on the basis of fake leukemia diagnosis.
In his statement, Almazbek Atambayev confirmed Batukayev's release was a part of the plan for extradition of Janysh Bakiyev, who was accused of the killing of peaceful demonstrators on 7 April 2010.
"Since 2011, as President of Kyrgyzstan, I made all possible efforts for extradition of Janysh Bakiyev. The main idea of the criminal case of Batukayev was that as a result of the planned special operation of the State National Security Committee, Janysh Bakiyev was supposed to be brought to Kyrgyzstan. This operation was led by its initiator, then chairman of the State National Security Committee. Unfortunately, the operation of the State National Security Committee was failed," Atambayev said.
"Neither criminal case materials, nor testimonies of witnesses pointed to facts of corrupt or any other unlawful actions on my part," the ex-President stated.
For this reason, Atambayev said, the court sessions were held behind the closed doors and the materials were classified to conceal the truth.
"In fact it turned out that I was handed 11-year prison term for support of the special operation of the State National Security Committee to bring the bloody perpetrator to Kyrgyzstan for holding him accountable," Atambayev stated.
While talking about then chairman of the State National Security Committee, Atambayev probably meant Shamil Atahanov, who held the post of the chairman of the State National Security Committee.
The guilty verdict against Atambayev was built upon Atahanov's testimony.
Atahanov was chairman of the State National Security Committee from 5 December 2011 to 29 October 2012 and then he was appointed as Interior Minister. Four months later, on 22 February 2013, he was relieved from duties of the Interior Minister, since he was nominated for Deputy Prime Minister.
After release of Batukayev in April 2013, he resigned for the period of investigation of the parliamentary commission into circumstances of Aziz Batukayev's release. He tendered resignation on 6 June 2013.
The fragments of the criminal case with Atahanov's testimonies leaked to the social media a year ago. Atahanov said he was approached by a foreign journalist, who hinted that influential people in Chechnya seek release of Aziz Batukayev (ethnic Chechen) from prison. The Chechen side in return promised to bring fugitive Janysh Bakiyev to Kyrgyzstan. Atahanov met with Atambayev and got permission for this operation...
Crime boss Aziz Batukayev was sentenced to 16 years and 8 months in prison on August 3, 2006. He was accused of murder of MP Tynchtybek Akmatbaev, prison chief Ikmatulla Polotov and two workers of the Parliament in October 2005 during riot in the prison in Moldovanovka village.
Batukayev was serving his prison term in Naryn. In spring 2013, he was released from prison on a fake leukemia diagnosis. Batukayev served half of his prison term.
