AKIPRESS.COM - Farmers of Kyzylorda region of Kazakhstan report about loss of hundreds of horses. They ask compensation from the government, Channel One Eurasia reported.
"200 horses died. This has started in August. It is unclear why horses die. We have been breeding livestock for 50 years, but have not seen such thing before," farmer Baikenzhe Kanetbek Kembai said.
The animal is sick for around 10 days, refuses from fodder and then dies. Treatment is helpless, he added.
The veterinary inspectorate blamed farmers for the loss of horses.
Horses die of gasterophilosis caused by larvae of horse bot flies. They attack animal when they graze in the steppe, they said.
"It was very hot this year. Animals need a special care, they were needed to be grazed in the evening, not during daytime. Farmers had to disinfect horses, wash and clean them to remove insects," local veterinary station chief Marat Kazybaev said.
The disease was officially confirmed in 4 districts of Kyzylorda region.
The district administration will set up a commission to discuss whether compensations to farmers for loss of animals may be paid or not.
