AKIPRESS.COM - Former Chairman of the National Energy Holding company Aibek Kaliyev voluntarily came to prison where he was serving his sentence on Oct 12, the National Security Committee reported.
Kaliyev was freed from detention by his supporters on the night of October 5-6 during the unrests after parliamentary elections.
Kaliyev was sentenced to 14 years in prison for corruption in illegal modernization of the Bishkek CHPP. Bishkek CHPP breakdown occurred on January 26, 2018 leaving the residents nearly without heating during the coldest since 2012 days. A number of high-ranking officials, including ex-Prime Ministers, were arrested afterwards within the criminal probe into the modernization of the power plant.
On October 5, 2020 peaceful protests against the results of October 4 parliamentary elections turned violent when the White House was stormed and clashes with police occurred injuring at least 1000 people and killing 1 civilian.
Jailed politicians, including ex-President Almazbek Atambayev and ex-Prime Minister Sapar Isakov, were freed by their supporters.
On October 6, the Central Election Commission of Kyrgyzstan annulled the parliamentary election results. Prime Minister and Speaker of Parliament resigned.
President of Kyrgyzstan called the events illegal power grab attempt and imposed a state of emergency and curfew in Bishkek.
