Uzbekistan to have presidential elections in October 2021

AKIPRESS.COM - The presidential elections will be held in Uzbekistan on October 24, 2021, Legislative Chamber Vice Speaker Akmal Saidov said, Tass reported. "In line with the draft law prepared by the Legislative Chamber, the presidential elections will be held not on the first Sunday of the third decade of December 2021, but on October 24. The Senatee is expected to approve the draft law prepared by the Legislative Chamber on February 5," Vice Speaker Akmal Saidov stated.
The lower chamber of the Parliament of Uzbekistan passed the bill in the first reading last week. In accordance with this bill, the presidential elections will be held 2 months earlier than planned. This move was explained with the need to carry out post-election political events without delay.
The previous presidential elections were held following death of first President Islam Karimov. They were held ahead of term - on 4 December 2016. Candidates from 4 political parties ran in the elections. Shavkat Mirziyoyev was elected with 88.61% of votes for a 5-year term. He was nominaed by the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan.
