AKIPRESS.COM - President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was elected as member of the upper chamber of the Turkmen parliament - People's Council. This was announced at the government meeting held by President Berdimuahmedov on March 29.
Parliament Speaker Gulshat Mamedova congratulated President Berdimuhamedov with election, adding 100% of citizens voted for the head of state, state media reported.
63-year-old Berdimuhamedov was elected into the upper chamber of the Turkmen parliament from Akhal province. This way he became member of the legislative branch of power heading the executive power at the same time. Berdimuhamedov is chairman of the government of Turkmenistan, that is Prime Minister of Turkmenistan.
In accordance with the amendments to the Constitution adopted in September 2020, in case the President of Turkmenistan can't perform his duties, speaker of the People's Council will perform presidential duties.
President Berdimuhamedov was not mentioned in the initial list of 111 candidates declared on March 1. But when tabulating the results, the Central Election Commission said 112 candidates for the People's Council were registered.
The amendments to the Constitution passed in September 2020 were seen by experts as a way to pass power to his son Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who was recently appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Audit Chamber, became member of the State Security Council.
