National Bank of Kyrgyzstan raises key rate from 5.5% to 6.5%

AKIPRESS.COM - The National Bank of Kyrgyz Republic decided to raise the key rate by 100 basis points to 6.5% from 5.5% in a decision that comes into effect on April 27. There is an economic activity recovery tendency seen in Kyrgyzstan, however domestic demand remains weak, regulator said.
The size of real wages decreased by 5.3% in January-February 2021. Remittances increased by 6.4% and amounted to $254.1 million in January-February 2021.
COVID-19 restrictions and the slower vaccination campaign in the world continue to have a restraining effect on global economic growth.
At the same time, the situation on global food prices and increased volatility in global financial markets are key factors affecting the economic recovery of Kyrgyzstan's trading partners and, consequently, the economic development of the Kyrgyz Republic.
The key rates a tool used by central banks to implement monetary policy. The key rate determines bank lending rates and the cost of credit for borrowers.
