AKIPRESS.COM - Bishkek mayor's office commented on a Victory Day banner hanged on the central square showing a German army soldier and a Soviet prisoner of war. "Citizens negatively reacted online to one of the banners. The concept of the overall design was aimed to convey to the younger generation the difficult and tragic path of our fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers, which eventually led to the Great Victory. After all, it is our duty to keep the memory of that great feat, the hardships and deprivations of the soldiers who defended their homeland, to honor as a story of valor, high patriotism and strength of spirit. We remember our history and are proud of it," the mayor's office wrote.
After the poster sparked online outrage, the banner was removed and new poster was hanged.
However, the social media users found out that the new poster shows not a soldier from Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic, but Radna Ayusheev, a participant of World War II, a sniper of the Northern Fleet Marines born in Buryatia.
