AKIPRESS.COM - Convicts from the Jaslyk prison will be transferred to prisons close to their place of residence, Deputy Interior Minister of Uzbekistan Bahrombek Adilov said, Kun.uz reports. "The Interior Ministry has been tasked to transfer the convicts to the prisons close to their domicile within a month. We are ready to fulfill this task," Adilov told a press conference.
He said the Interior Ministry can consider possible visit to Jaslyk prison for journalists.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed the order on closure of the Jaslyk prison on August 2. According to official reprots, 395 convicts are held there now.
"The Jaslyk prison was built in 1999 in Jaslyk village, Kungrad district of Karakalpakstan. This prison has a notorious fame in the world. We decided to close down the prison, since it is 300 km away from Nukus, 180 km away from Kungrad district. In winter, the air temperature goes below -20 degrees Centigrade and in summer it reaches 50 degrees above zero. Parents and children of convicts had to travel a long distance from Ferghana, Andizhan, Surhandarya regions spending their time and money," Interior Minister Pulat Bobozhonov said earlier.
The prison is intended for 1,100 convicts. Of 395 prisoners held there now, 10% serve prison terms for religious extremism.
