Bishkek, Sept.26, 2019. /Kabar/. An exhibition and a series of master classes on making of traditional Kyrgyz felt carpets (shyrdak and ala kiyiz) takes place at Frunze Museum, Bishkek on Sept. 26-28, 2019.
Master classes are held to promote and preserve traditional knowledge on making of ala-kiyiz and shyrdaks. Seven masters from seven oblasts of Kyrgyzstan, bearers of traditional knowledge and ornamental symbols, will give free open master classes and hold informal talks about traditional art at the Frunze Museum for three days.
The events will help a wide audience, including young people, to learn more about the rich culture and diversity of traditional handicraft knowledge and skills of the Kyrgyz people, related to the culture of felt carpet production.
Note that, in 2012, the Kyrgyz traditional art of making shyrdak and ala-kiyiz felt carpets was inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in need of urgent protection.
