AKIPRESS.COM - Environmentalists are concerned over problem of utilization of radioactive wastes in Kazakhstan, Khabar 24 reports.
According to various sources, there are 170-200 million cubic meters of dangerous substances, that according to specialists, negatively affect the entire radiation background of the country and threaten the population's health.
A specialist Margulan Khamiyev specializes in radiation safety issues for many years. Kazakhstan, he says, faces a huge problem with utilization of radioactive wastes. There are 2 nuclear test sites in the country, according to him: 468 blasts occurred in Semipalatinsk and 40 - in Kapustin Yar in West Kazakhstan region, he noted.
According to experts, most of the mining companies often do not utilize pipes that became radioactive during the exploitation process. They just put them into storage.
There is no a law on management of radioactive wastes and nuclear wastes, experts said.
Local executive bodies also do not fulfil their obligations, including allocation of funds for this problem, which might end up with environmental threat.
