AKIPRESS.COM - Vladimir Putin met with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in Moscow on May 8. Putin noted that this time Rahmon is visiting Russia both as president of Tajikistan and as head of the CSTO since Tajikistan preside over the organization this year. He thanked Rahmon for the visit and noted Tajikistan's contribution to the overall victory over Nazi Germany.
"We will have the opportunity to talk about bilateral relations during the visit. I am pleased to note that Russia remains Tajikistan's main trade and economic partner. Although trade turnover has fallen slightly due to the pandemic, there is every reason to believe that it will be restored," Putin said.
He also stressed the importance of the issue of migrant workers. "We are doing everything to make people feel comfortable, especially since we are currently short of workers in entire sectors of the economy," the Russian president added.
Rahmon thanked Putin for the invitation and congratulated on Victory Day. "Tajik-Russian relations today are developing dynamically in all spheres. Russia is our main trade and economic partner. Ties in the cultural and humanitarian fields are getting stronger. I would especially like to mention our close cooperation in the security. Our relations are developing within the CIS, the SCO and the CSTO. Today I am ready to discuss bilateral relations and future, as well as international and regional issues that you have mentioned, primarily the issue of security. That is the number one regional issue right now, given the US announcement of withdrawal of more than half of its troops from Afghanistan, where internal situation has sharply deteriorated," he said.
"We have the longest border with Afghanistan, which is almost 60 percent of the border of the former Soviet Union," Rahmon said.
