AKIPRESS.COM - About 300 people rallied in front of the White House to protest development of uranium in the country.
Policemen were there to maintain public order. Historian Eleri Bitikchi said the protesters demand full ban on development of uranium, not just temporary moratorium.
"Moratorium is just a certain period of time," he said.
On 27 March 2019, Kara-Balta Mining Plant and Economy Polimers Ru LLC signed a cooperation agreement worth $30 million during the state visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Kyrgyzstan. The money will be used to modernize the existing plant and develop uranium deposits in Issyk-Kul. Kara-Balta Mining Plant will process the uranium ore from Kyzyl-Ompol site. The uranium tailings will be buried in the decommissioned tailing storage near the village of Marmara, Sokuluk district, according to the agreement.
Locals protest against the development of uranium since December last year.
List of Demands The protesters demand:
1. Parliament Speaker Dastan Jumabekov to adopt relevant laws banning development of uranium on the entire territory of Kyrgyzstan;
2. President Sooronbai Jeenbekov to sign into law the bill banning uranium development on the entire territory of Kyrgyzstan;
3. Chairman of the State Committee for Industry Emil Osmonbetov to revoke all 35 previously issued licenses for geological exploration, mining and processing of uranium on the entire territory of Kyrgyzstan;
4. Prosecutor General Otkurbek Jamshitov to launch criminal probe and start investigation of who and when issued license to UrAsia company and bring those responsible to criminal liability;
5.Interior Minister Kashkar Junushaliyev and Chairman of the National Security Committee Idris Kadyrkulov to immediately stop intimidating and prosecuting the environmental activists in Issyk-Kul region and entire Kyrgyzstan protesting against uranium exploration and mining.
6. to immediately stop any insinuation about benefits from exploration and mining of uranium in Kyrgyzstan.
